Texas A&M Biology Shines at Darwin Day Outreach Event
By: Heath Blackmon
On February 28, 2025, Texas A&M’s Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (EEB) program hosted its annual Darwin Day outreach event, drawing an impressive crowd of 1,500 visitors from across Bryan-College Station. This year’s event was one of the largest yet, featuring 56 booths representing research labs, student organizations, and community partners, all focused on sharing the excitement of evolution, genetics, and the biological sciences with the public.
The Department of Biology played a central role in making this event successful. Labs across the department developed activities, including hands-on experiments, live organisms, and interactive displays that introduced visitors to key evolutionary biology, genetics, and biodiversity concepts. Booths hosted by the Moran, Blackmon, Keene, Strader, Criscione, Ramsey, and Wicksten Labs, alongside the Biology Graduate Student Association (BioGSA), highlighted our faculty and students’ cutting-edge research and outreach commitment. From exploring how genomes evolve to understanding the wonders of marine biodiversity and plant evolution, Biology faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates provided visitors of all ages with unique opportunities to learn and engage.
Though sponsored and organized by EEB, Biology’s involvement reflects our department’s dedication to community engagement, science education, and broadening public understanding of biological research. We are proud to see many Biology labs contributing to a vital outreach effort that connects science to the broader community.
