Urania Wells Honored with President’s Meritorious Service Award

Texas A&M Biology is proud to announce that Urania Wells, Administrative Coordinator II in our department, has been awarded the prestigious President’s Meritorious Service Award. This accolade recognizes her exceptional dedication, unwavering loyalty, and outstanding service to the university community.
Urania Wells has been a cornerstone of the Department of Biology for nearly 20 years, demonstrating remarkable resilience and commitment through various challenges. She has consistently maintained her composure and professionalism, ensuring the department’s operations ran smoothly. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Urania was a key staff member, ensuring the department’s operations ran smoothly. Her selfless service and dedication were evident as she supported her colleagues and the university during difficult times.
A long-time colleague shared, “I have known Urania for close to fifteen years. When I first joined the department as a new PhD student, Urania treated me with kindness and patience. As I transitioned into a faculty role, she continued to support me with calmness and respect, even during challenging moments.”
Urania’s respect for herself and others is a testament to her character. She consistently puts 100% into her work, driven by her respect for the university, her colleagues, and the students. Her dedication to maintaining integrity is evident in her interactions with students during exams, both ensuring that the Honor Code is upheld and that struggling students have a listening ear.
One memorable story highlights Urania’s excellence. During an exam, a student experienced a severe nosebleed. Urania took immediate action, providing care and comfort to the student, who now continues to visit her office regularly. This incident exemplifies the strong relationships she builds with students.
Urania’s leadership skills are equally impressive. She manages multiple staff members that help all students in Biology’s courses. Her ability to facilitate daily, weekly, monthly, and semester-long duties ensures that the department runs efficiently, providing a top-notch experience for thousands of students.
Her colleagues describe her as indispensable, stating, “Urania makes our jobs 100% easier. Without her help, support, direction, and organizational skills, we wouldn’t be the well-oiled machine we are today. She takes on extra responsibilities with grace and professionalism, preventing issues before they arise.”
Supported by The Association of Former Students since 1986, these awards are presented by the Office of the President at Texas A&M in recognition of outstanding staff and students who have demonstrated their commitment to the Aggie Core Values of Excellence, Integrity, Leadership, Loyalty, Respect, and Selfless Service.
